Stopping by Brooklyn Botanic Garden on a Thursday Afternoon


A conifer grows toward the center of the ceiling

its needles dusty and discolored out of season



Little blooms A spiny orange beak thing tiny

yellow trumpets scattered on a vine



Theories are afloat that trees have consciousness

Walking along Cortelyou I had an epiphany



Language doesn’t say A sentence is a container

of thoughts What I write is a cloud in which



specific words materialize When she called

I could tell she’d been crying I asked what



was the matter and she said I was raped

Call the cops I said No she said I just want



to forget it happened Joviality is a twist

on hysteria Our day goes on hers and



mine The courting of disaster in the form

of placing oneself in tenuous situations



yields consequences which shrivel with

time and as such have no power Really



I have no beef with capitalism except

as it affects the environment I sort of



like cable and fast food I’ve stopped

believing recycling garbage will help



Things I think about are words things

I don’t are negative capability My



identity is 6% fixed I can smell

chemicals Condensation drips



on windows Fans hum in the

peak of the ceiling Ugly white



beams frame the lying blue

sky Sunlight strikes the other



side of the room turning it

a brighter eager green.
